Dear Brother

When I first met him in September 1991 at Edmonton, Canada, he reminded me of my brother who was around the same age. Shuang had boyish good looks, a spirited and confident young man with maturity in his manners and actions beyond his years. In the midst of preparing for their wedding, he was taken by surprise by my offer to apply a light dusting of face powder for him, which I explained as to minimise the shiny face effect for the wedding photo shots. He accepted it without complaint and in good humour although that must be the first time he got make-up on his face. In honour of my husband and my visit to Edmonton, he has bought the biggest Maine lobster we have ever seen, so huge that it would not fit into any pot. We had to cut up the meat and at that time he was not an expert in culinary skills, the responsibility of cooking it went to me as I was considered the most experienced. Actually I was quite nervous with the pressure of everyone's expectation of tasting the fabulous lobster while I had not cook a lobster before in my life! Fortunately I stir-fried it in Chinese style with preserved black beans and chilli which was well received and everything ended well. My sister Yian Leng and Shuang were students completing their doctorates so we felt really bad that they had to fork out the big expense of the Maine lobster. They were so in love and the wedding though simple, was very romantic. Since both my husband and I were blessed as their witnesses, we felt very much like proud parents. The four of us continued the celebration by driving to the Rockies where we stayed at a resort there for a few days. Later on they had another wedding ceremony and feast in Singapore and I was appointed the make-up artist for my sister and yes, Shuang too! Still can recall when they were having their wedding shots in the photo saloon while I was hanging around waiting to touch up the make-up for them. After a long time and numerous photo shots later, I tried to stifle a yawn quite unsuccessfully, was caught by Shuang's alert eyes although he was the busy bridegroom. They invited me into the room to watch the proceeding at close quarters and to talk to me in between photo shots. I was very happy that my sister has found her right Mr Right. Shuang was being his usual keen observant and thoughtful self. Throughout the years that I have known him, he was always alert and sensitive to the needs and feelings of others. In later years, although he achieved much through his brilliance and enterprise, he has remained a kind, caring and humble person. He loved children and was very good with them, my daughter Yi Shan has always regard him as her favourite and best uncle. These intrinsic qualities endeared him to many people and I am no exception, to me he is my dear brother. During the occasional family outings with us in Canada, Boston, Florida, Malaysia and Singapore, his exuberance has always made him the bright spark of the party. His energy and ideas never ceased to amaze us then. In recent years, his relentless fight against cancer while bravely soldiering on with life as usual and his stoic endurance of the disease also never ceased to amaze us. He was a devoted husband and father, loved his wife and children so dearly that whenever possible, every minute gained from his brave fight was spent with them. I had the privilege to hold his hand on the afternoon of 7th January 2012 to tell him that I love him, my dear brother, to be near him when he ended his short but well-lived life in the morning of 8th January 2012.
